Free Government Money to Improve Your Property

£5,000 and £10,000 vouchers for air source heat pumps.

The Green Homes Grant is now closed.

With the Green Home Grant scheme, the Government were aiming to create new jobs by paying all or most of the bill for green upgrades to your home. The £10,000 vouchers were for homeowners who have someone in the household receiving certain benefits payments and it meant that you could have had free insulation, for example, or a new air source heat pump installed completely free of charge.

Your questions answered

Energy efficiency and your home

Loft insulation is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to make your home more energy.  But it can be difficult to find the money ‘up front’ to pay for professional installation. Therefore, in a bid to tackle fuel poverty in the UK, the Government has made available a number of grants for insulation for people on benefits – and that includes the Green Homes Grant. These grants are typically used to ensure the loft of the property retains more heat and that the building envelope (the separation between the interior and exterior environments) is as secure as possible.

What are loft insulation grants?

There are many different types of grants available to help homes become more energy efficient. Green Homes Grants are the most recent and, though them, homeowners in England with a member of the household in receipt of benefits can apply for funding up to £10,000 to cover the total cost of loft insulation and/or cavity wall insulation and/or solid wall insulation. All other homeowners in England are eligible for a grant of up to £5,000 to cover the cost of eco work  – and the grant can cover two-thirds  of the cost of the work, with the homeowner paying just one third. Alongside what are called ‘primary measures’ such as insulation, the Green Homes Grant can be used for improvements such as double glazing.

Note, however, that are limited Green Homes Vouchers available and the sooner you apply for your grant, the better!

What is cavity wall insulation?

Cavity wall insulation is suitable for properties which have what is known as a ‘cavity wall,’ or a wall with a hollow, empty space in between the interior and exterior walls of the property. The main purpose of these cavities when they were used in the 1920s and 30s, was to keep the interior wall dry and separate from the elements. Best practice now is to fill the cavities with specialist material to improve thermal insulation and help the home stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Who qualifies for loft insulation grants?

Many homes and properties will qualify for free loft insulation grants from the UK government.  This includes the Green Homes Grant for houses and properties in England, and which HomeSun is working with,  These grants are available to both houses and flats, although the processes of installation will differ.

Park Homes can also qualify for these grants.

I'm on a low income – can I apply for a grant?

In short, yes. Regardless of your financial position and your household income, you can apply for Green Homes loft insulation grant in England and receive the funding needed to make your property more energy efficient and more comfortable to live in.  Not only that, but any type of home improvement can help to increase the appeal of the property to potential buyers.

Will I be means tested for an insulation grant?

If you are a homeowner and anyone in your household is receiving eligible  benefits (as list above), you qualify for a Green Homes Grant! But you’ll need to apply before the vouchers run out because the Government has set a budget limit – so once they are gone, they are gone.

How to apply for a loft insulation grant on benefits

Register today with HomeSun for your loft insulation voucher to get you and your property on the way to enjoying loft insulation.  Whether you are eligible for the £10,000 or £5,000 vouchers, we will organise everything for you.

What can I buy with my Green Home Grant vouchers?

Your Green Homes Grant can be spent on a range of home improvements that will should save you money – from insulation to air source heat pumps and double glazing. The Government has split the possible spends between ‘primary’ and ‘secondary measures’. Primary includes insulation and heat pumps. That’s because these are ‘measures’ (work) which are important first actions to reduce the amount of energy a home wastes and, of course, the amount of money you might be wasting also! HomeSun will help you work out what you can best spend your voucher on.
