Solar Street in Delabole
In April the UK’s first ever solar street was created in Cornwall by five neighbours from Delabole near Bodmin. It all started with Graham Sanderson. The deal from HomeSun was so good that Graham decided to share the offer with his neighbours.
Graham Sanderson, one of the original neighbourhood ring leaders said: “I always tried to make my home as energy efficient as possible. Over the years I’ve installed insulation and other energy saving devices so I was incredibly pleased to come across this great deal from HomeSun. It was the ideal solution to save money on my energy bills and make my home as green as possible.
Five installations took place on the day and the installation teams started bright and early to ensure that each neighbours solar power system was up and running by early afternoon. Graham was astonished how the process was quick and simple. "I’m looking forward to seeing the final outcome and of course helping to save me and my neighbours some money on our bills!”
An estimated 28,300 homes in Cornwall are eligible for free solar panel installations, with right-sized roofs and south-facing orientation to make solar power worthwhile. Additionally, Cornwall’s population of 468,425 generates up to 1.1 million tonnes of CO2 per year from household emissions, a massive 27% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions. Fortunately, due to the unusual sunny weather and a sharp increase in installations in April, more than 7.2 million kilowatt hours of electricity have been generated by the domestic solar systems.
